How to feel better and play better

A few students have described this approach as ‘piano therapy’ - and really, that’s not a bad name for it. We learn how to move with ease and comfort at the piano, and turn those new movements into long-term habits for piano and life.

Imagine, if we worked together, what this would look like: What activities would we do? What would the teacher be like? Would it be fun?

Once you’ve done that, I want to tell you about my student Alex…

Alex was a beginner who developed debilitating pain in his hand and neck. He had even been forced to quit playing because of the pain.

After a few lessons he was able to play in short intervals, pain-free. In a few months, he was playing chords and improvising again.

Here’s what he has to say:

“The lessons were a lifesaver for me. I had debilitating pain that prevented me from playing piano, and the lessons with Jordan made it possible for me to return to playing. . . the lessons also improved my movements generally, when doing things like driving, working at the computer desk, cutting vegetables, etc.

Also, it was wonderful to connect with Jordan, hear his insights on music and on the relationship between music and movement, sound-making and bodywork.”

- Alex K. (Boston, MA)

Another pianist, Kate, had a similar experience. She was worried that I would be rigid. She even expected me to tell her she’d just learned things the wrong way. Here’s what she said:

“My piano lessons are music therapy. Jordan’s curious, exploratory, and non-judgmental approach to piano playing is really beneficial. I am more at peace with where I am in my piano journey!” - Kate B. (Dallas, TX)

Did you expect these students to talk about finding more peace in their journey? How about a non-judgmental approach? Or that for Alex, this approach was a lifesaver?

Let that sink in for a second: this approach might have been the difference between him playing piano for the rest of his life, and quitting forever.

A surprising number of pianists - even professionals - have pain or discomfort. I went through a serious bout of tendonitis myself, so I get it. (More about that here.) That painful experience is what drives me to help others.
